Medea, a Greek tragedy, was written by Euripides (480-406 BC), who was the third of the three great Greek tragedians. This play was composed and put on stage in 431 B.C. , and it won the third prize in the City Dionysia. Euripides' Medea remains one of the most classical characters, because the playwright was different from the other two, changed the theme of universe and destiny to human burdens, and reduced the part of chorus. Especially in Medea, Euripides depicted psychological aspects of his characters more than ever; thus, this play is even considered as the pioneering work of psychodrama. We can also see that he offered deep sympathy to the lower-class women. In his presenting the female problems, we may also see his feminine consciousness. It is worthwhile to discuss and understand the action of revenge in this play. I shall begin my discussion with the dramatic action of Medea, followed by examining how the action of revenge is presented in terms of plot, character, and though.
