Impact of Street Light and Road Environment on the Detection of Roadside Pedestrian

This study aims to investigate the effects of the street light type and the road environment on driver's response of road side pedestrian detection in either daytime or nighttime. In the daytime, a 2 (with or without shadow) x 2 (road environment, residential area vs. open area) experiment was conducted; while for the nighttime experiment, the three street light types (white vs. yellow vs. no-light) and the mentioned above two road environments were designed as the independent variables. The participants' reaction times and response accuracy were collected as the dependent variables. Results show that the driver reacted faster in the daytime than that in the nighttime. Furthermore, in the nighttime with yellow street lights caused drivers to respond the roadside pedestrian faster than them in the white street lights. In general, complex road environment (the residential area) has negative impact on driver's detection and response performance.
