專業英文(ESP):公眾演說與英語簡報

The Correlation between English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Students of Two-year Continuing Education

摘要


專業英文(English for Specific Purposes, ESP)近年來受到英語教學界的高度重視,主要起因於台灣產業不斷與全球接軌,在國際市場自由競爭下,英文能力提升與精進儼然成爲各行各業共同努力的目標之一。基本上,專業英文可歸類爲兩大領域:學術英文(EAP, English for Academic Purposes)以及職場英文(EOP, English for Occupational Purposes),近十年來英文教育在政府大力推廣下,現今的學生在聽、說方面的技能確實有逐年提升的現象。他們似乎較能適切地用英文表達自己的觀念及想法,然而勾通的本質並不只侷限於日常生活對話而已,而是更深層的訊息互換(Information Exchange),尤其在商場或貿易範疇間,適切地傳達訊息及觀念溝通便成爲現代人不可或缺的另一項技能了。爲了提供在職生能將所學實際運用於職場上,本校外文系特別開設兩門必修課程,分別是是公眾演說(Public Speaking)與英語簡報(English Presentation)。本研究之目的在於了解課程設計(Curriculum Design)是否與學習者需求(Learner's Needs )相吻合。藉由本系三十五位二技在職專班學生的問卷調查、錄影及面談來釐清此課程設計是否與學習者之需求相吻合。

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) which contains English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Occupational Purpose (EOP) has played an important role while Taiwan has been connecting its industries into the global market. Promoting its international competitiveness has currently become a significant issue. After emphasizing listening and speaking in the field of English education for a couple of years, it seems that more and more students can express themselves much better than before. However, the nature of communication is not only for simple daily conversation but also concise information exchange, especially in the domain of trading. To provide our students who are both working and studying for two-year continuing education with ample communication skills at their work place, English presentation and public speaking have been offered to fulfill their personal needs. Thus, this study is to explore learner needs, curriculum design, discourse analysis and pragmatics while documenting all the process and product of thirty-two students who are currently working as managers, engineers, teachers and secretaries, etc. by conducting questionnaires, videotaping and interviewing in the course.
