Imaging Modern Sexuality: Body Politic and Female Body in Hong Ying's Novel "K"

China's 1930s is a period of transition, of cultural exchange, of revolution, as well as of revolution and of liberty. Hong Ying's novel ”K” reexamines this conflicting and utopist period through her narrative that blurs the distinction between body politic and female body. Focusing on three sets of themes-the East versus the West, modernity versus tradition, revolution versus copulation-this essay examines the sexual interaction between a renowned female novelist and a western male. By doing so this paper can examine the difficulties that modern China faced, such as the phenomenon that China was Orientalized by the West and then re-Orienralize itself even further; the ambiguity of a modern intellectual shows toward tradition; the depression and anxiety experienced by youngsters that were caused by the incompatibility between revolution and romance. In exploring the aforementioned dilemmas, the reflections in ”K” focus on the sexual quest and the self identity from a female's perspective, pointing out the preposterous dimensions of Orientalism, the inconsistency of modernity as well as the insubstantiality of revolution. All of this invites us to reexamine and evaluate the cultural scenarios in China's 1930s'.
