Energies from the Sun: Opportunities and Challenges after Japan's Nuclear Crisis

After the Japanese earthquake, the whole world was threatened by the induced nuclear crisis. The alternative power sources to nuclear power generation are greatly desired. However, how to cherish the earth's environment, but also to enjoy economic prosperity, is a dilemma. Fortunately, some new technological advances, such as the development of magnetic materials and the lowered production cost of solar cells, have opened the chances for the solution. In this report, aimed on this issue, we make a survey and try to evaluate the costs of using the alternative energies. It is suggested that to replace the nuclear energy, suitable energy storage systems to overcome the instability of the renewable energies (such as photovoltaic and wind energy), should be employed. Nevertheless, the current capital cost of the solar system in $/W, considering storage, still can not compete with that of nuclear energy. It is recommended that the government should devote more resources in technique researches and process improvements so that the capital cost of the solar system can be reduced down to 0.8$/W, to compete with nuclear energy. And eventually, we expect the achievement will lead the whole world to cast away nuclear energy and embrace the green energy.
