Two types of quinolinone-fused dihydrothiophenes 10 and 13 have been efficiently synthesized from a common starting material 8, 4-methoxycarbonyl-3-oxotetrahydrothiophene. Conversion of compound 13 to the corresponding quinolines 14 and 15 is accomplished by chlorination and catalytic hydrogenolysis, sequentially.
