The author studied all the records of birth weight of the newborn in the nursery of Chong-Ho Memorial Hospital of Kaohsiung Medical College from January 1976 to December 1977. The relationships between the season, parity, age of mother, time and type of delivery and the birth weights of 1,660 newborns (861 male and 799 female) were analyzed, and results were presented as follow. 1. The mean birth weight of all newborn was 3,200.8±512.6gm, that was 3,261.3±538.2gm for male and 3,153.2±480.4gm for female. Meanwhile, that of 1537 full-birth weight newborns (>2,500gm) was 3,336.4±381.6gm and of 123 low-birth weight newborns (<2,500gm) was 2,042.3±410.6gm. 2. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the birth weights among different maternal age and time of delivery. However, the differences in birth weights were significant (P< 0.05 and P<0.01) for different parity, season and type of delivery..
