For the purpose of understanding the relations between types of delivery and serum bilirubin levels in newborn infants, 1,283 full-term newborn infants born at the delivery room of Taipei Municipal Chung-Hsin Hospital were observed during the period of Jan. 1976 to Dec. 1977. Blood group incompatibility, cephalohematoma and G-6-PD deficiency which could influence serum bilirubin levels were excluded from the study. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The relation between various types of delivery and the levels of serum bilirubin measured daily showed statistically significant difference. That is; higher levels of serum bilirubin were found in both vacuum and breech deliveries, and lower levels in cesarean section deliveries. 2. The relation between the distribution of the highest values of serum bilirubin and types of delivery revealed that the values of serum bilirubin in cesarean section deliveries were almost under 12 mg%, and in vacuum deliveries almost over 12mg%, Among the rest, the highest values of serum bilirubin, over 17 mg%, were demonstrated in the highest percentage of cases with vacuum deliveries.
