In this study, serum immunoglobulin G, A and M levels in healthy infants from birth to 12 months of age were investigated. 729 serum specimens were collected from normal full term newborns in nursery and healthy infants under 12 months of age who visited out well baby clinic. These infants were divided into 3 groups-breast feeding group, bottle feeding group and mixed feeding group. Each group contained 8 subgroups by age. The concentrations of immunoglobulins were determined by the method of single radial immunodiffusion, using Behring M-partigen immunoplates. The Student's t-test was used for statistical analyses. The results showed: (1) In all 3 groups, the concentration of Serum IgG was highest at birth, and decreased rapidly to the lowest level (breast feeding group: 467.5 mg% bottle feeding group: 514.3 mg%, mixed feeding group: 481.7 mg%) at 3 months of age, and then increased to 753.5 mg%, 730.3 mg% and 710.2 mg%, respectively, at 12 months of age. There was no significant difference in the concentrations of serum IgG among these 3 groups except at 9 months of age when the IgG of the breast-fed infants was higher than that of mixed-fed infants (P<0.05). (2) The concentrations of serum IgM in these 3 groups increased gradually after birth and reached to 91.5 mg%, 94.7 mg% and 92.3 mg%, respectively, at the age of 12 months. There was no significant difference in the concentrations of serum IgM among these 3 groups. (3) The concentrations of serum IgA were found to rise throughout the period of infancy in these 3 groups, and reached to 49.9 mg%, 49.6 mg% and 50.1 mg%, respentively, at 12 months of age. But the speed of increase in IgA during the first months of life was slower in the breast feeding group than those in the bottle feeding group or mixed feeding group. The concentrations of IgA of breast feeding group at the age of 1 and 2 months (i. e, 8.5 mg% and 14.6 mg%) were significantly lower than those of bottle feeding group (14.4 mg% and 22.2 mg%) (P<0.005, P<0.025) and mixed feeding group (14.0 mg% and 21.4 mg%) (P<0.025, P<0.025). Such difference disappeared after 2 months of age.
