The history of fluid therapy was reviewed, and the present status of fluid therapy in this island was analysed by the amount of fluids utilized in the year 1983. Unbalanced fluids were still prescribed in a large amount. The treatment of hyponatremia is very difficult. Potassium, phosphate, calcium and magnesium should be included in the solution to be infused, especially when more than three days of infusion are prescribed. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous and fatal condition which needs prevention rather than treatment. Oral and enteral fluid replacement is the most promising and physiological route of replacement. Studies-on sulphate metabolism is needed in the future.
