The efficiency of oral clonidine (0.15mg/m^2 body surface area) as a stimulant for growth hormone release was evaluated in 28 children and adolescents with short stature. Serum growth hormone response to oral clonidine was compared with that to intravenous insulin. Although clonidine did not consistently provoke a higher serum growth hormone response in those without growth hormone deficiency, it gave fewer false subnormal responses than insulin. In view of these findings and The absence of unacceptable side effects with clonidine, it is concluded that the oral administration of clonidine is a simple, safe and reliable test for growth hormone secretion.
