Y染色體之存在與否決定了人類的性別,而Y染色體上、睪丸決定因子(TDF)的基因,一直被廣汛的研究。近來位於Y染色體短臂上的SRY基因,被認爲是最可能代表TDF的基因。本研究針對SRY基因,利用聚合酶鏈反應的技術,以臨床上性別不明的病人做材料,發現偵探SRY基因可以快速而且准確的鑑別出病人的性別。

It has long been known that testes arise only in the presence of a Y chromosome. The existence of a hypothetical gene, the testis-determining factor (TDF) on the Y chromosome, has therefore been postulated. SRY is the gene located in the sex-determining region of the human Y chromosome and has many of the properties expected for TDF. To evaluate the value of SRY PCR in sex determination, individuals with ambiguous genitalia were selected for study. By identification of the DNA sequence of SRY, a 609-bp fragment of PCR product, sex determination could be successfully made.
