Euplotes pseudoelegans n. sp. (Hypotrichida; Euplotidae): Description of a New Species Previously Misidentified as Euplotes elegans Kahl, 1932

並列摘要

In 1960, Michel Tuffrau described a Euplotes species he misidentified as Euplotes elegans Kahl, 1932. During a recent neotypification of E. elegans Kahl, 1932 [Schwarz et al. 2007 J. Eukaryot. Microbiol. 54: 125-136], it became obvious that Tuffrau actually had identified a morphologically highly similar novel Euplotes species. Therefore, we here describe Euplotes elegans sensu Tuffrau, 1960 as Euplotes pseudoelegans n. sp. As a cosmopolitan and euryhaline species, E. pseudoelegans n. sp. has been reported from marine, brackish and freshwater habitats from the tropics to the high Arctic. In vivo, the oval species is 40-89 μm long and 30-63 μm wide. The adoral zone extends to more than 2/3-3/4 of the body length and is composed of 33-49 membranelles. Euplotes pseudoelegans n. sp. possesses 9 frontoventral cirri (cirrus VI/2 is completely reduced), 5 transversal cirri and 4 caudal cirri (2 right caudal and 2 left marginal cirri). The dorsal silverline system is of the multiple type with 3-5 irregular shaped polygons between the dorsolateral kineties. Euplotes pseudoelegans n. sp. possesses 8 longitudinal kineties with approximately 20 kinetids in the mid-dorsal kinety. As no type preparation or type location is given, a neotypification or redescription including a phylogenetic analysis of this species and a detailed comparison with morphological highly similar species (e.g. E. muscorum Dragesco, 1970 and E. muscicola Kahl, 1932) are highly recommended.
