The aim of this research was to study the utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in breast cancer patients. In total, 70breast cancer patients from surgery outpatient department in a regional hospital were personally interviewed with semi-open questionnaires from April to October in 2005. The results showed that the trend of utilization on CAM was increased significantly after the confirmation of cancer. The number of patients who used CAM before cancer being diagnosed was 21 (30.0%). It increased to 39 (55.7%) after the confirmation of breast cancer (p<0.01). The most prevailing utilization rate of CAM after the confirmation of breast cancer was at least once a day (87.2%). The majority of CAM utilization duration was at least six months (51.3%), and that of the average expense were less than 10 thousand dollars per month (71.8%). The major reason for adopting CAM was the recommendation from friends (33.3%). The most popular type of CAM was Chinese herbal medicine (56.4%) among all. The satisfaction rate toward the effect of CAM after the confirmation of cancer was 53.9%. In summary, at least half of breast cancer patients used CAM while accepting western medical treatment, which should deserve serious consideration by modern medical staffs.
