Who Articulates Cancer Risks and Attributions of Responsibility in Newspapers? The Source Factors on the News Construction of Cancer Risks in Taiwan

This article analyzes the cancer risks constructed in newspapers, and how the news sources are associated with the risk reported in Taiwan. Using a quantitative content analysis method, this study examines the five major national newspapers in Taiwan. This study finds that personal risk factors and responsibility are emphasized by the news, while environmental causes and potential societal determinants were seldom mentioned. Medical experts dominate the news discourse and mainly contribute to the personal-oriented risk and responsibility conveyed by news. Government, NGOs and laypersons, in addition to articulating the same perspectives, are also likely to offer diversified risk factors and other agents' responsibility. This study suggests that government, NGOs, risk communicators, and social scientist should endeavor to set media agendas for delivering diversified perspectives regarding environmental and societal causes and resolutions of cancer risk in news coverage.
