Butachlor is a selective premergence herbicide for use in transplanted rice, direct seeded rice, and rice seedling beds. It is absorbed by the shoots of plants and inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible plants. It will control most annual grasses, annual sedges and certain annual broadleaf weeds. It provides effective weed control for 30-40 days. Butachlor is absorbed by soil colloids. The product is degraded by microorganisms with some chemical decomposition. The product does not persist in water, environment, or crops.
