The significance of lignin in the photodegradation of woody materials is described. The reaction mechanisms the photo-induced discoloration and degradation of lignin are discussed. According to the present knowledge about the photodegradation of lignin, it is concluded that photo-induced oxidation of lignin is a major reaction in the degradation of woody materials. This photooxidation includes three main steps, viz. the absorption of light by lignin, the formation of free radicals, and reactions between the phenoxy radicals created and oxygen with the formation of colored degradation products.
