Comparing to anionic direct dyes-the most common use in paper industry, cationic direct dyes have a strong attraction for most paper fibers i.e., bleached pulps, unbleached pulps, deinked pulps and mechanical pulps. They are positively charged and are attracted by the negative charge of the paper fibers and fillers. Additives-fillers, dry and wet strength agents, sizes and cationic starch when added to pulp containing cationic direct dyes are not only do not cause detrimental effect for the dye exhaustion on fibers but also impart a good affinity to the dyes. In addition to the aforementioned advantageous effect for the cationic direct dyes, dye retention on fibers can be improved by the use of "cationic direct dyes fixing on the anionic direct dyes" technicques and colored effluents can be reduced.
