The purpose of this study was to investigate the temperature rise on wood surface and provide the information of fracture during the static bending test. The air-dried China fir(Cunninghamia lanceolata) and Taiwan zelkova(Zelkova serrata) wood specimens were cut to the size of 20 mm (T) × 20 mm (R) × 320 mm (L) along radial and tangential loading directions for static bending test. The surface temperature rise at wood fracture during the loading procedure was measured with a thermographic device. The temperature rise on the tension side was remarkably higher than that of compression side during the bending fracture for both specimens of China fir and Taiwan zelkova. Although the bending strength of Taiwan zelkova was stronger than that of China fir, however the lower temperature rise in bending fracture was observed. It showed that the temperature rises at bending fracture were not significantly affected by wood species, or the bending strength.
