The Preparation and Pore Characterization of Activated Carbon from Ma Bamboo (Dendrocalamus latiflorus) by ZnCl_2 Chemical Activation

High specific surface area activated carbon materials have been produced from the naturally occurring Ma bamboo (Dendrocalamus latiflorus) by using zinc chloride (ZnCl_2) as the activating agent. The effects of different sizes of raw materials, impregnation ratios, activation temperatures and holding times on the specific surface area, pore morphology, and yield of activated carbon are studied. According to these results, a high specific surface area and micropore volume were achieved as high as 1387 m^2/g and 0.74 cm^3/g for activated carbon derived from Ma bamboo by zinc chloride, under the optimized conditions of impregnation ratio 5:1, activation temperature of 500°C, and a holding time of 120 min. According to IUPAC adsorption-desorption isotherms curve classification, the Type I isotherm is suitable to explicate results prepared activated carbon from Ma bamboo by different variables, the adsorption data were well described by Langmuir monolayer adsorption, indicating the major microporous structures. Chemical activation of Ma bamboo by ZnCl_2 is a useful technique for obtaining activated carbon with desired pore size distributions and pore morphologies from low cost precursors and at low activation temperatures.
