A monitoring program for pesticide residues in marketed fruits and vegetables was performed. A total of 1,605 fruit and vegetable samples were collected by the local health personnel from the supermarkets and traditional markets in Taiwan. The samples were analyzed by the multi-residue methods, which were proclaimed by the Department of Health, to determine 136 types of pesticides. Eleven (0.9%) in 1,222 vegetable samples and five (1.3%) in 383 fruit samples were found to contain pesticide residues and did not comply with the Regulation set by the Department of Health. The overall non-compliant rate was 1.0%. Of the samples that violated the Regulations, six contained pesticides residue above the tolerance level, and ten samples contained pesticids that were not allowed in fruits and vegetables. The penalty was enforced by the local government according to the Food Sanitation Management Act.
