The Effects of Space on Basal Area Growth and Survival of Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica)

The study purpose is to examine the space effects on stand basal area growth and survival ratio of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don). Five levels of spacing trial consisting different initial distances, 1×1 m, 2×2 m, 3×3 m, 4×4 m and 5×5 m are installed. The Schumacher model and relative survival model are used to predict stand basal area growth and tree survival, respectively. The results show that the time of maximum current annual increment (tmaxCAI) and maximum mean annual increment (tmaxMAI) increases while initial distance increasing. The relative survival ratio increases in accordance with initial distance increasing. The results further provide quantitative information for Japanese cedar plantation management.
