In this study two experimental fishways of the modified-larinier type were established: one at the Pabawchun Experimental Fishway station and the other at a check dam in wushykeng Creek in the field. The former was 12m long and 1m wide with a slope 1/10 and the latter was 27.4m long and 1m wide, with 6.1m drops. Both the fishways were made of wood. Using these two fishways, experiments on fish upstream migration and sediment transport were conducted. The results showed that the modified-Larinier type fishway was better than the traditional pool-type fishway. It enabled various species of fish, including pelagic, adhesive and crawling species, to migrate upstream, and at the same time providing a good sediment transport to avoid the blockage by sediments (sand, gravel and rock).
