Challenges and Perspectives: The Natural History Museum in Response to Global Changes

The prospect of climate changes and increasingly extreme weather has made the function of natural history museums worldwide all the more important. The role of such museums in archiving pre sent day examples of biodiversity is challenging and this challenge is only likely to increase into the future , especially in the case of Taiwan where preservation of the existing fragile island ecosystems are under threat from industrialization, agricultural practices, extreme weather events and other natural disasters. Natural history museum s play an essential role in educating the public on the importance of maintaining biodiversity. In Taiwan, there is a need for better preservation of collections and collection security through exchange of duplicate specimens, information transfer and sharing by exploiting the many advantages of the Internet, discussion forums on a wide range of regional and local problems as they relate to biodiversity, and effective division of labor among relevant agencies to improve resource allocation and efficiency of budgets. In addition, museum staff need to be trained and kept aware of issues relating to biodiversity so as they can act more responsibly. Finally, the viability and sustainability of natural history museums depends on how well they are run on a day-to-day basis. All the above considerations are important for natural history museums to continue in their essential function as preservers and educators of our natural history. Public awareness of the threats to biodiversity and the role biodiversity play s in maintaining balanced ecosystems is highly necessary if, as a society, we wish to leave a planet rich in biological diversity for coming generations.
