Geothelphusa laowang n. sp., is a new freshwater crab described from the montane area of the Central Range in southern Taiwan based on the evidence from the morphological characters and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I. This species is distinguished from similar congeners by the morphology of the male first gonopod and the proportions of the male thoracic sternites. Molecular evidence also supported the status of the new species. Moreever, molecular phylogenetic analysis suggested that ten species may be present in the Central Range clade and with six of them still undescribed. The high species diversity of freshwater crabs in montane area may resulted from the low gene flow impeded by the high mountain barriers.
