Study on the correlation of uneven degreening and virus infection in Cavendish banana

摘要

Uneven degreening is a kind of ripening disorder in Cavendish bananas reported from subtropical banana growing regions in Taiwan. The objectives of this study are: (1) to detect the presence of BBTV and CMV in the peel of unevenly degreened bananas using ELISA test; and (2) to correlate the occurrence of uneven degreening and virus detection in CMV infected banana plants. In the indexing of BBTV and CMY in the peels of bananas after post harvest treatment, BBTV was not detected in the unevenly degreened bananas or the normal control group in the cultivar Pei-chiao (Giant Cavendish). Only a low level of CMV could be detected in the unevenly degreened bananas. There was no significant difference in the frequency of virus detection in the unevenly degreened bananas and the normal control group studied during the peak season of uneven degreening in 1995 and 1996. In the cultivar Pei-chiao, CMV could be detected in about 50% of the fingers sampled from CMV infected plants, but no uneven degreening was observed in the fruits of CMV infected plants or the normal control group. In the somaclone GCTCV-105, CMV was detected in 34.2% of the fingers sampled and only 5% of the hands showed uneven degreening. In the symptomless plants 3.5% of the ripened fingers indexed were CMV positive and the occurrence of uneven degreening was 11.2%. The above observation suggested that the occurrence of uneven degreening in Cavendish bananas in Taiwan is not related to viral infection of the banana fruits.
