The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, was recently found as a new insect pest in Taiwan. It attacks leaf and root of rice in field and causes great enonomic loss.Originally, the rice water weevil was from the United States, then, it invaded Japan in 1976 and distributed to whole country. It was first found on rice plant at Hsinwu in March, 1990 and the estimated damage area was about 30 ha. After then, it spreaded to Hukou, Hsinfeng, Chupei, Hsinpu, Chiunglin, Omei, Chungli and Pate. Scattered in Hsin-Chu, Taoyung county. The peak of L. oryzophilus population in Hsinwu occured in late March. Average of 2.6 adult rice water weevil infected each hill of rice. The population of L. oryzophilus was decreased with the increase of rice growth and accumulate rainfall. Average of 10.1 larvae rice water weevil injured root of rice per hill. The reproduction of L. oryzophilus is parthenogenes. No male was found in laboratory.
