There are three levels of schools namely; vocational, junior college, and university, for the preparation of nurses in the Republic of China today. There were 13 vocational schools with a total enrollment of 11,836 students and 2,691graduates in 1985. In junior colleges, there were three kinds of programs namely; a five-year course with nursing and midwifery, a two-year course for graduates of the vocational schools in basic nursing training and a three-year course which took only Senior High School graduates for basic nursing training. In 1985, there were four two-year programs and six five-year programs with a total enrollment of 8,659 students and 1,724 graduates. Midwifery training was offered in the additional year of vocational nurses training or four-year Nurse-Midwifery Combined Course in vocational schools or in five-year junior college course. The ratio of teachers to students in vocational school was 1:7.7 in public schools, and 1:27.8 in private schools. In junior colleges the ratio was 1:9 in public schools and 1:20 in private schools. There were seven B.S. university courses with a total enrollment of 1,208 students and 266 graduates in 1986. There were only two graduate institutes with a total enrollment of about 16 students with 10 graduating students in 1986. Although the total number of graduating students from all levels of schools was recorded as 5,115, a sample study showed that from 8% to 30% of the graduates failed to obtain licenses to practice nursing within the following five-year period. The number of B.S. degree graduate nurses in the present work force is very small, with a total of 1,041. Of the 1,041 graduates nurses 529 (51%) are working in hospitals and 353 (34%) nurses are working in teaching positions. Among the graduates of KMC School of Nursing, (379 graduate nurses), 33.8% are in clinical nursing and 28.2% are in teaching position, 8.8% are in graduate study and the remaining 30% are not presently working in the field of nursing. In respect to the future development of nursing education, we propose that the graduate institute for nursing be strengthened by opening opportunities for the preparation of faculty members, and that the faculty members in the schools of nursing be given an opportunity to function as nurse practitioners or clinical specialists in order to serve as role models for the students. Also, channels of communication within the nursing faculty should be opened to aid in the revision of curriculum.
