Simulation and Experimental Validation of Al7075-T651 Flow Drilling Process

摘要

Flow drilling uses a rotating conical tool to pierce the workpiece and generate a bushing in a single step without producing chips. The present work deals with experimental analysis and numerical simulation of the flow drilling process on Al7075- T651 alloy. During this process, thermal and plastic material deformation occur and subsequently the temperatures in the contact zone between the tool and workpiece vary in a very wide range leading to large plastic deformation in the material around the forming hole. Since, the temperature changes and plastic deformation of workpiece in flow drilling takes place in a very short duration, numerical simulation becomes very significant. Variations of workpiece temperature, thrust force and torque values were obtained experimentally and compared to numerical simulation results and a conclusion was made that the assumptions made during simulation are valid and the numerical model logically describe the flow drilling process.
