Workplace bullying refers to intentional and ongoing acts of bullying that accumulate over time. Long-term bullying in a workplace environment can result in burnout, fatigue, decreased working performance, and severe depression. Bullying not only affects quality of care but can also endanger the lives of patients. This study adopted a cross-sectional study design, enrolling 234 recently-qualified nurses (average age: 24.96 years; average service years to date: 1.78) from a medical center in northern Taiwan. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of workplace bullying among recent graduate nurses and the consequences of job burnout and decreased health care productivity. The results revealed the following: 27.8% of respondents had been bullied in the last six months. In terms of the workplace bullying Care Survey Scale (NAQ-R) distribution, as many as 64.8% of nurses had been subjected to bullying during the initial 6-month period. Because of different data collection methods engendering various results regarding the prevalence of workplace bulling, caution should be exercised when comparing the outcomes. It was observed that nurses who are subjected to bullying are more likely to experience job burnout as well as decreased health care productivity. Authorities should address the problem of workplace bullying and provide assistance and intervention strategies, thereby helping to create friendly working environments.
