Adolescents with bone cancer often encounter symptoms of distress and negative moods, such as anxiety and depression. However, hope may have a positive effect on such adolescents and enhance their future prospects. Hope is not only a universal phenomenon in human life but also embodies the experience of a positive being and strengthens the meaning of life for adolescents undergoing treatment. This study investigated the essence of hope in adolescents with bone cancer during their treatment by using a phenomenological approach along with drawings and descriptions. First, the concept of hope, as proposed by Snyder, was considered, and the intentionality perspective of phenomenology and the drawing method were used to illustrate the adolescents' holistic descriptions of their hope experiences. Purpose sampling was employed to select participants from a medical center in Taiwan, and adolescents with a diagnosis of bone cancer and who were undergoing treatment were included in the study. A total of 10 adolescents were included. To analyze data collected from the participants, Colaizzi's analytical method was applied, and to ensure the rigor of the study, Lincoln and Guba's trustworthiness criteria were employed. The findings revealed four themes: motivation to set meaningful goals, development of coping strategies, the power of caring, and spiritual and positive energy. The study findings can help in the development of nursing interventions aimed at assisting adolescents with bone cancer during treatment. Through such nursing interventions, health-care professionals can contribute to the development of a positive attitude among adolescents with cancer and assist them in navigating the challenges of their treatment journey.
