Inhibition of Substantia Nigra Neurons by Noxious Stimuli in Rats

Unit discharges of neurons of the substantia nigra, pars compacta (SNC), were recorded in urethane-anesthetized rats. While painful stimuli or heat thermal stimuli were applied to the skin and deep tissues, spontaneous firings of SNC neurons were decreased in the firing rate with the spike amplitudes more or less increased. A similar suppression of SNC neurons was obtained by stimulating pain receptors chemically with intradermal injection of ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid.
