Traditional heat integration system synthesis focuses on identifying the solution giving the minimum total annualized investment. The resulting process design may demonstrate poor structural controllability. In this paper, process controllability analysis during the process synthesis phase is taken into account. Aimed at synthesizing a cost effective and highly controllable heat exchanger network, a systematic process synthesis methodology is introduced, which involves utilization of system disturbance propagation models. The application shows the efficacy of this synthesis methodology.
