Influence of the Citrus Nematodes, Tylenchulus Semipenetrans, on Growth of Sunki, Citrus Reticulata Var. Sunki

The economical importance of the citrus nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans Cobb, has been reported by Thomas, Baines, and Van Gundy. For understanding the influence of this nematode on growth of Sunki, Citrus reticulata var. Sunki (Havata) Toung, a common rootstock in Taiwan, this experiment has been conducted for 10 months, from May of 1964 to March of 1965, at the Yangmingshan Field Station, Shihlin Horticultural Experiment Station. 20 small uniform Sunki seedlings, which had been grown in the steam-sterilized sandy learn soil, were selected for this experiment. 10 individual pots containing one seedling each were inoculated with the citrus nematode larvae which had been propagated from a single eggmass. Approximate 100,000 larvae were syringed into the soil around each seedling. The other 10 seedlings grown individually in each pot were used for check. This experiment was carried out in the well-contro1led greenhouse, and all of the seedlings were grown under conditions of uniform and sufficient nutrition and soil moisture. 10 months later, all seedlings were carefully removed from soil to measure. Results indicated the citrue nematode can significantly decrease the growth of Sunki seedlings. Averagely, the reductions in height, total fresh weight, fresh weight of roots, length and width of leaves, and numbers of leaves were 24%, 51%, 62.8, 17.6%, 17.1%, and 12.8% respectively.
