In Dec. 11, 1984, satellite fishing ground data system (NOAA-APT receiving system) had been installed by T. F. R. I. (Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute) for recieving infrared images obtained from the NOAA series satellite. According to the infrared images around waters of Taiwan Strait during the fishing season of grey mullet in winter, cath data and oceanographic data observed by research vessel of T. F. R. I., shool of grey mullet seems migrating along the protruding cold filament betweem the warm branch of Kuroshio and coastal line of western Taiwan. This cold filament of lower temperature and salinity protrudes from mid western coast (Hsinchu-Taichung) and extends gradually southward, the width of this cold filament is narrower to the south (from 10 to 5 miles) and forming obvious front to the warm branch of Kuroshio. It is suggested that school of grey mullet are obstructed within the tip of the cold filament and forming dense school available for fishing activity.
