This paper examines the nature, extent and economic characteristics of the charter boatfishery in the Northeast Coast region in 1993.Personal interviews were completed with44 of the 90 charter boat operators and 83 recreational fishermen in the region. The studyrevealed that all charter boats made a recreational catch of 3,351 tones of fish with 14,535fishing trips.Estimated total recreational fishermen were 133,224 in 1993.Catch rates, tripscosts, and fishing experience significantly affect the demand for charter fishing trips. Thus, the improvement of catch rates and trips costs could be a desirable policy for the fishery.Estimation of costs and revenues per boat gives existing firms in the fishery a basis forcomparison to improve management practices.
