This study provides information on reproduction and food habits of kawakawa Euthynnus affinis in Taiwan. A total of 981 kawakawa caught by set net and small purse seine were collected during 1995-2001. Three methods, histology, gonadosomatic index and oocyte diameter frequency distribution suggested that the spawning season was from April to August with the peak in July. Size at first maturity of female kawakawa estimated from the Logistic model was 48 cm fork length. Mean batch fecundity (± SD) was estimated to be 487, 205±161, 191. Kawakawa is a piscivorous feeder. The most important prey items of the immature smaller kawakawa were the local teeming prey fish such as larval anchovy and lanternfish. The matured larger fish were preferable fed on larger-sized prey fish such as Decapterus spp, Scomber australasicus although they also depended on the small-sized local teeming prey fishes.
