The purpose of this research is to examine the effect that the contemporary sexual revolution and women's movement, both of which began in the 1960's, have had on the American romantic novel. The plan of the research will be to set forth the principal elements of each phenomenon within its sociocultural context, and then to discuss shifts of emphasis in thematic and literary structure of the American romantic novel that may be attributed to the phenomena. Reference will be made to American novels written both before and after 1960.
