The effect of small amounts of B_2O_3 additive on the magnetic properties of sintered anisotropic barium ferrite was investigated. An increase in both coercivity and energy product with increasing B_2O_3 up to 0.5 w/o is possibly explained by the solid phase BaO-rich Ba borate which acts as a grain growth inhibitor in sintering. A reduction in coercivity with increasing B_2O_3 in excess of 0.5 w/o and increasing sintering temperature is evidently ascribed to the exaggerated grain growth by the liquid phase B_2O_3-rich Ba borate in sintering.
