The Effect of Superplasticizer on the Rate of Hydration of Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag-Cement Mixtures

The study is a comparison of the rate of slag hydration in slag cement pastes as a function of slag type, slag homogeneity in the slag-cement blends and the quantity of superplasticizer blended into the slag cement pastes. A Portland cement, three ground granulated blast-furnace slags and a naphthalene based superplasticizer were blended into slag cement pastes with and without superplasticizer, each with an initial water/cement ratio of 0.5. The homogeneity of slag in the blended slag cement paste was studied by using a computer-controlled scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer and an X-Y monitor. The early stage hydration rate of slag-cement blends was also studied by using an isothermal conduction calorimeter. Moreover, the hydration kinetics was followed by determining the percentage of reacted slag in various hydration stages covering the range from 1 day up to 28 days, by a selective dissolution method. The results of these studies demonstrate several phenomena. One phenomenon is that slags with higher lime/silica ratios or a higher hydraulic index and a higher glass particle content are potentially more reactive. Another phenomenon is that the beginning two days hydration of cement pastes and slag cement pastes can be retarded by the addition of superplasticizer. The third phenomenon is that an increase of the homogeneity of slags in cement matrix as by the use of a superplasticizer can improve the degree of slag hydration.
