This study uses a program called FLAC3D 2.0 to analyze the static deformation in a shallow tunnel excavated in soft ground. The numerical results show that the final surface and sidewall settlements due to the side drift tunneling method are smaller than those by the bench cut method. The crown settlements in the earlier stage also have the same behavior. The results also show that the side drift tunneling is suitable to control the surface settlement in tunneling excavation, but it needs another engineering techniques to prevent extra displacement at tunnel crown.
