Y309 stainless steel with high Cr and Ni contents is becoming more important for use as core material for welding wires. Because of the high value, a lot of domestic steel manufacturers are interested in its production in Taiwan to replace imported goods. This study is aimed at solving the technical problems of its production and simulate the hot rolling conditions to investigate the hot workability at different temperatures. The microstructure of Y309 under different hot rolling conditions was studied systematically. Also the pickling conditions were researched in this study. The optimal parameters for the production of this material were found out after a series of experiments in the laboratory. These technical parameters were carried out in manufacturing plant and proved optimally. The yield rate achieved more than 97% and productivity was improved from 5 up to 20 tons per hour.
