The germination of high (E. C. <40), medium (50<E. C. <60) and low vigor seed (70<E. C. <80) of three pea cultivars ”Taichung No. 9”, ”No. 11” and ”Tsai Lai Pei Hua” were 100, 96 end 76%, respectively. Seven days after germination, the radicle and epicotyl length for high, medium and low vigor seed were 5.0, 2.8, 2.2 cm and 3.2, 2.3, 1.3 cm, respectively. Percentage of normal seedlings and vigor index of high vigor seeds were higher than the medium and low vigor seeds. The soaking seed revealed high leaching rate two hours after imbibition, and showed the maximum within 4 hours; electric conductivity (E. C.) in leachate showed that high volume substrates leached out from seed after two hours of imbibition, reached the highest value after 4 hours, and leveled off after 18 hours. Correlation coefficient between K(superscript +) in leachate and percent germination as well as between K(superscript +) and root length were -0.81 and -0.71, respectively. Correlation coefficient between amino acid and root length were -0.79 and -0.77, respectively. The significantly negative correlation results indicated that measuring the K(superscript +) and amino acid content in leachate can be used as seed viability indexing.
