The surface and volume energy terms in the Bethe-Weiszäcker mass formula E= -a(subscript v)A+a(subscript s)A^(2/3) are determined by counting energies of the level sequence of Nilsson's deformed nucleus. If the depth of the potential well is chosen to be 46.5 MeV and the distortion parameter is taken from the experimental value of Stelson, a(subscript v) and a(subscript s) are then equal respectively to 15.7 MeV and 17.8 MeV, which reproduce exactly the correct values determined by Green.
