Investigation of Proximity Effect by Electron Tunnelling

We have studied the proximity effect with lead/silver films by use of Al-oxide-Ag/Pb and Al/oxide/Pb/Ag tunnelling junctions. From the tunnelling characteristics we find the induced energy gap and the effect of the induced strong coupling in silver film' due to lead film. The reduction of the energy gap and that of the strong coupling effect in lead film due to silver film are also studied. The energy gap thickness dependence is shown to be in agreement with the McMillan's tunnelling model of the superconducting proximity effect.
