Raman Scattering by Polaritons in Potassium Bromate Crystals

We have studied three lower polariton branches of a potassium bromate single crystal by the method of near-forward Raman scattering. The polariton branch associated with the 778.5cm^(-1) phonon mode of E-symmetry was observed with frequency down to 675 cm^(-1); that associated with the 792.5 cm^(-1) phonon mode of A1-symmetry was observed down to 750 cm-r; and that associated with the 419 cm^(-1) phonon mode of &symmetry was observed down to 391 cm-r. Their Raman frequency shifts were measured as functions of the Raman scattering angles. The polariton dispersion curves (frequency verse momentum) were calculated with the data obtained from the right-angle Raman spectra. Our experimental results were found to be consistant with the theoretical prediction.
