Derivation of the Non-negative Karle-Hauptman Determinant from the Dynamical Theory of X-ray Diffraction

The non-negative Karle-Hauptman determinants used in the direct methods for phasing the X-ray structure factors are derived from the dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction. The positivity requirement of electron density in the direct method is employed in the derivation. Considerations are also given to the development of the fundamental equation of wavetields from the original quadratic form, which led to the K-H determinants.
