The current status of theoretical study of ion-atom collisions at low to intermediate energies based on close coupling methods is reviewed. Several important concepts underlying ion-atom collision physics are pointed out, and their usefulness and limitations are shown in application of the ion-atom model to ion-molecule and ion-surface collisions.
