Cross-sections for excitation and ionization of inner shells of atoms by massive ions are calculated in the distortion approximation. The target atom is approximated by a model potential and the electronic wave functions are expanded in terms of Slater-type oribtals to obtain bound states as well as pseudostates; the latter are used to represent the continuum states from which ionization cross sections are calculated. It is shown that the distortion approximation gives accurate results for the cross-sections for the total excitation and ionization over a large range of impact energies and is applicable to heavy projectiles. Comparisons with experiments for several systems and with other calculations are discussed.
