Observation of the Surface Phonon Mode in Coated Zn Nanoparticles

Raman scattering and infrared absorption from fine spherical Zn particles coated with ZnO of variable thickness were measured. A broad peak was observed in the Raman and infrared absorption spectra, which shifts to the lower frequency side with the increase in oxide thickness. We can attribute this to a surface phonon mode. According to the relation between the surface mode frequency and coating thickness, the oxide layer thickness can be estimated.
